Wow! Hilke was amazing! Our teenagers were dreading their third tour in 10 days. Hilke was able to adapt our tour to start in the neighborhood where they could see street art and then took us to see the sites that were interesting to them. Wenn das die Kaiserin gewusst hätte!

Das Kunstwerk, genannt Mauerbrunnen, fällt auf. In einer langen Linie erstreckt es sich schräg himmelwärts. Was in der Vertiefung liegt, die zum Kunstwerk gehört und die Linie verlängert, fällt hingegen gar nicht auf: Dort, wo ein langes, schmales Becken in die Erde gegraben ist, unterbricht ein Stück querlaufende Mauer die Pflasterung. Sie ragt nicht hervor, sie unterscheidet sich nur in Richtung und Art vom umliegenden Bodenbelag.
Und in der Tat hat es mit diesen Steinen eine ganz besondere Bewandtnis: „Es handelt sich um die letzten Reste der evangelischen Kaiserin-Augusta-Gedächtniskirche, die hier bis 1967 stand und zur damaligen Invalidenkirchengemeinde gehörte", sagt Stadtführerin Hilke Gerdes. Diese Kirche hat eine wechselvolle Geschichte hinter sich, seit am 11. Juni 1890 der Grundstein gelegt wurde. „Dass der - inklusive Inneneinrichtung - insgesamt eine Million teure Bau überhaupt möglich wurde, ist nicht zuletzt dem Kaiserhaus zu verdanken, das 300.000 Mark beisteuerte", sagt die Berlin-Kennerin, die sich in der Stadt mit Vorliebe auf die Suche nach kleinen, vergessenen Relikten begibt. Auch der Spitzname „Gnadenkirche" geht auf diese Spende zurück. Außerdem wurde das Grundstück kostenlos überlassen und die Großherzöge von Baden und Weimar sowie der Fürst von Hohenzollern spendeten zusammen 200.000 Mark. Hinzu kamen 100.000 Mark der Vereinigten Kreissynoden und Spenden anderer evangelischer Berliner Kirchengemeinden. Der tatsächliche Name der Kirche, Kaiserin-Augusta-Gedächtniskirche, ist naheliegender Weise dem Gedächtnis an Kaiserin Augusta (1811-1890) gewidmet, die fünf Monate vor der Grundsteinlegung, am 7. Januar 1890, das Zeitliche gesegnet hatte. Sie war mit Kaiser Wilhelm I. (1797-1888) verheiratet gewesen.
„Wenn Beerdigungen auf dem nahe gelegenen Invalidenfriedhof stattfanden, wurde die Kirche für die Andachten genutzt; Soldaten, die als besonders verdienstvoll galten, wie der Jagdflieger Manfred von Richthofen, wurden hier mit Staatsbegräbnissen geehrt", sagt Hilke Gerdes. „In der Nazizeit", fährt die Stadtführerin fort, „ spielte die Kirche keine rühmliche Rolle: Sie gehörte zu den Deutschen Christen." Die Deutschen Christen hatten zum Ziel, den Protestantismus an die nationalsozialistische Ideologie anzugleichen. Sie versuchten, den so genannten Arierparagraphen in die Kirchenverfassung zu übernehmen und wollten Pastoren jüdischer Abstammung ihres Amtes entheben. Gegründet 1932 in Thüringen, hatten die Deutschen Christen schon 1933 die Leitung einiger Landeskirchen unter sich. In Berlin konnten sie bei den Wahlen am 30. November 1932 durchschnittlich 30 Prozent der Sitze in den Gemeindekirchenvertretungen auf sich vereinigen.
Als Gegenbewegung gründete sich im Mai 1934 die Bekennende Kirche, die die Lehren der Deutschen Christen in der Barmer Theologischen Erklärung von 1934 als unchristliche Irrlehren ablehnte. Der Konflikt zwischen diesen beiden Flügeln der evangelischen Kirche ging als „Kirchenkampf" in die Geschichte ein.
Im Zweiten Weltkrieg hatten die Predigten der Deutschen Christen in der Gnadenkirche dann aber ein Ende: Der Vierungsturm wurde von einer Bombe getroffen, Trümmer stürzten in das Kirchenschiff und machten das Gotteshaus unbenutzbar. Da die Kirche aber immer noch besser erhalten war als manches Haus, suchten Ausgebombte hier Schutz. Nach dem Krieg wurde die Inneneinrichtung ausgeplündert, die Kirche verfiel immer mehr, zumal die Diebe das Gotteshaus auch seiner Kupferdächer beraubt hatten und die Mauern Wind und Wetter ausgesetzt waren.
1967 wurde die Ruine schließlich gesprengt. Das hatte sich das Kaiserhaus sicherlich anders vorgestellt, als es 300.000 Mark für die Errichtung der Kirche stiftete. Immerhin: Eine der drei für ihre Klangqualität berühmten Kirchenglocken hat nach längerer Odyssee zwischen Ost und West ihren Platz auf dem nahe gelegenen Invalidenfriedhof gefunden. Und hier am Originalplatz ist ein kleiner Rest übrig geblieben, ein Mauerstück, das im Denkmal „Mauerbrunnen" verläuft. Ein Denkmal im Denkmal.

So geht's zu den Kirchenmauerresten:
Die Kirchenmauerreste befinden sich in der Vertiefung des Mauerbrunnens. Dieser steht im Invalidenpark. Die Scharnhorststraße und die Invalidenstraße führen daran vorbei.
